 Multi-level Marketing (MLM), also known as network marketing or pyramid selling, is a controversial marketing strategy for the sale of products or services where the revenue of the MLM company is derived from a non-salaried workforce selling the company's products/services, while the earnings of the participants are derived from a pyramid-shaped or binary compensation commission system. This strategy is characterized by the ability of each participant to recruit new participants, who in turn recruit their own participants, creating multiple levels of compensation based on the sales achieved by their recruited network.



MLM is often touted for its potential to empower individuals by enabling them to start their own business with a relatively low upfront investment, usually in the form of purchasing a starter kit of products. Advocates of MLM highlight the opportunity it provides for passive income through the building of a downline of distributors who sell products and recruit further distributors. This model is designed to leverage personal relationships and social networks for the sale of products and the recruitment of new members, blurring the lines between personal and professional relationships.
